Townsville is a dry city and your Council is vitally committed to protecting and preserving water as one of our most valuable assets.
Drought conditions seen not only here but across Queensland highlight the need to turn what was once considered a waste product into a vital resource.
Under the $100M Water Matters program, Council has constructed state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facilities and upgraded various components of Townsville's wastewater collection and recycled water distribution systems.
While major upgrade works were undertaken at treatment facilities on the mainland, a significant part has focused on environmentally sensitive Magnetic Island off our coast.
This program has completely replaced the Horseshoe Bay Wastewater Treatment Facility, updated piping and pumping equipment in the collection system, extended the wastewater system in Nelly Bay, provided high-quality recycled water to irrigate the Magnetic Island Sports Field, and established a major Dry Tropics Rainforest area open to the community and also irrigated with recycled water.
On the mainland, the existing Cleveland Bay Wastewater Treatment Facility has been extensively upgraded to a state-of-the-art facility, major pumping stations have been enhanced and associated wastewater collection systems have been extended or refurbished.
Recycled water reuse protects the local environment and waterways by reducing the need to discharge recycled water into the marine environment and at the same time conserving valuable drinking water supplies.
The Water Matters Alliance, made up of Abigroup Contractors, Aquatec Maxcon, GHD Pty Ltd, United Group Infrastructure and our own Water and Wastewater unit, has created world-class outcomes and positioned our city at the forefront of sustainability.
