The Water Matters Alliance

The Water Matters program have delivered a state-of-the-art wastewater management network to produce recycled water that can be reused in the community and help protect the environment for future generations.

The $100M program, funded by Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government, has dramatically improved the quality of recycled water produced by Townsville's and Magnetic Island's existing treatment facilities, meaning this resource is now safely used to irrigate public sports grounds and nature reserves - thus conserving valuable drinking water supplies.

This city-wide initiative has involved construction of a new wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) at Horseshoe Bay on Magnetic Island, new wastewater collection pipelines from Nelly Bay and a recycled water distribution system to provide irrigation water to the Magnetic Island Sportsground.

Upgrade works were also undertaken on wastewater treatment facilities on the mainland, including a major rebuild of the existing Cleveland Bay WWTF and Cluden Pumping Station as well as construction of a 13km pipeline to provide town water to the communities of Alligator Creek and Julago, south of Townsville.

Cleveland Bay Wastewater Treatment FacilityAssociated works included new pipelines, pumping station upgrades and other smaller projects. These smaller jobs have all been completed to support the major works.

Cutting-edge technology will pave the way for the reuse of 90% of our wastewater by 2010, allowing for greater protection of our diverse and unique marine environment.

The Water Matters construction program was completed in August 2008, ensuring Council continued to protect the environment with better quality wastewater services. Process and monitoring will continue for another two years.
